The market research company Euromonitor International reports Macau is now the sixth most visited city in the world.
The 2017 rankings research also reveals that the annual number of tourists visiting the gambling hub has declined about 1.8 per cent from earlier years. Observers say the decrease was caused by the Chinese government recent corruption crackdown in the region.
Nearby Hong Kong headed the list of most visited cities. Trailing Hong Kong in the rankings are Bangkok, London, Singapore and Paris, as the five most visited cities in the world. The research company attributes the ranking of Macau and Hong Kong to the large number of Chinese tourists.
