Ventured out to Ohjah Noodle House for oxtail soup

Well it’s been nine years since I have moved from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas and I believe this December and January was the coldest and had the most rain I can remember since moving here. Yes, it still beats snow but I’ve become spoiled with the good weather I have become accustomed to in Las Vegas. With the up and down weather we have had I have also caught the worst cold I have had in a while and that illness is where this week’s food article comes from.

When I was a kid nothing made you feel better than a hot bowl of Mom’s homemade soup. Mom made all kinds of soups but one of my favorites was this hearty soup with meat. Now when your dad owns a meat packing plant you get all kinds of meat to cook with. My mom loved to make soup with oxtail in it. Little did she know some 40-plus years ago that oxtail would be so fashionable a cooking ingredient today.

Oxtail was perfect for soup because the meat would become very tender as it slow cooked in the broth while the marrow of the bone would add so much flavor to the broth as it slow simmered for hours in my mom’s kitchen.

I was missing a nice hearty bowl of soup with oxtail so I ventured out to the new Ohjah Noodle House located at 7150 S. Durango Drive, Suite 190. It offers an Oxtail Ramen that I tried, and it was excellent. It had a nice sized piece of oxtail in it along with ramen noodles, scallions, sprouts and a cooked egg floating in the ramen.

You can also add seasonings or make it different spice levels. I passed on the spice but did add the black garlic oil to the ramen and it was a great addition, adding to the flavor. I’m glad the waiter suggested it. The Oxtail Ramen hit the spot and eating the oxtail meat put me back in my mom’s kitchen on one of those cold winter days when I wasn’t feeling good and she knew how to make me feel a little better with some good comfort food.

Ohjah Noodle House has several different ramen dishes to choose from including a regular beef ramen and a seafood ramen. I did start with an order of the garlic edamame as an appetizer, which was excellent as well.

If you aren’t in the mood for ramen don’t worry, they have several other options such as Fried Rice and Fried Noodle dishes along with several appetizers. 

Ohjah is more known for their Japanese Steakhouses around the valley but based on what I had at their first Noodle House I expect we will see more of those as well around town.

The servers were very attentive and helpful in the ordering process for newbies to ramen and the portions were very filling, flavorful and quite reasonably priced as well. I’ll be back again soon. I give Ohjah Noodle House 3.5 Forks.
