It’s not even June, and many are discussing football season, which always seems to be just around the corner, or never ended. In taking a look at the season openers, one game stands out as one to watch, and quite possibly bet – the New York Giants against the Dallas Cowboys.
At present the Cowboys are favored by as much as 6, and 5½ at many of the sports books. The total is set at 50½, which I initially felt might be a bit high, but it’s tough to predict first week. It might be wise to stay away from the total, and look to a side. The question is, which side?
The game is scheduled to take place in Dallas at 5:30 pm PT as the initial Sunday Night Football telecast on NBC. Diehard fans of both teams will likely recall last year’s season opener, which had the Giants squeaking out a 20-19 victory, which might have gone the other way had Cowboys’ receiver Terrence Williams remembered to head for the sidelines to stop the clock.
Before doing any homework at all, my gut told me to go take the Giants and the points because when it comes to Dallas at home I just don’t trust them, especially when playing a rivalry game against the Giants.
The last time the Cowboys beat the Giants by more than 6 was in 2014. Even though this is a new Dallas team and they will be ready, the Giants will likely come prepared to fight.
The Cowboys lead the overall series 62-46-2, but it’s not just wins that matter when it comes to playing ATS. You need to take a look at the spread, and consider the most recent past if you want to predict the future.
This game could set the momentum for the season, and chances are it’s going come down to the wire. While the Cowboys can pull off the win, they struggle against the Giants so it’s probably best to go with NYG and the points.
