Racino Controversy at Aqueduct
Jersey, NY vie for more gaming

(December 30, 2008 8:47 AM) -

by GT Staff | Monmouth Park (horse racingMonday morning’s edition of the Newark Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest newspaper, carried a story about slots probably coming to the four state race tracks – Atlantic City Race Course, Meadowlands, Freehold and Monmouth Park. "The stars – or the cherries – are aligning," the Star-Ledger published.

Meanwhile, New York Governor David Patterson has proposed round-the-clock gaming for the state. Patterson wants Quick Draw, New York’s version of keno, to be extended from its current 13 to 24 hours a day. He also wants the racinos in operating statewide to be open 24 hours along with lowering the legal gaming age from 21 to 18.

Paterson also advocates a multi-state lottery game and an international high-stakes game. He also supports considering the use of table games (blackjack, roulette, craps etc) for track racinos. The major New York tracks are Belmont, Aqueduct, Saratoga for thoroughbreds and Yonkers, Roosevelt and Monticello for harness racing.

As for New Jersey, the Star-Ledger reported in its editions, "New Jersey desperately needs the cash. The casinos, starving in this economy, won’t have the tens of millions they’ll need to bribe the state tracks and keep the slots out."

The paper concluded by saying: "While Sports Darwinists believe horse racing should be allowed to die, others like State Senate President Richard Codey want to take one last shot at saving an industry that produces 13,000 jobs, 176,000 acres of farmlands and pumps $1.1 billion into the New Jersey economy."
