Now that my life is so prearranged, I know that it’s time for a cool change – Little River Band
This is Westgate SuperContest Seminar week, only this time the approach is different and will bring two major sportsbooks together. And the beneficiaries for this harmonic convergence of handicapping intellect is we, the betting public.
“I think change is good and we wanted to do something different,” said Jay Kornegay, the father of Super Bowl props and purveyor of the SuperContest, the nation’s most prestigious football handicapping event.
But it’s the seminar we’re focusing on, which for the past six years has devoted several hours in mid-August to gathering the finest minds in our business to assess the upcoming college and NFL season along with a Saturday round of golf.
The golf is still on, but this time around though the seminar comes in the form of the VSiN Network, which is bringing its South Point boys from the desert led by Hall of Fame broadcaster Brent Musburger to the Westgate SuperBook for three days of shows beginning Thursday.
“We respect the SuperContest and thought it would be a great opportunity to promote it and the industry,” said Vinny Magliulo part of the quality team at South Point that includes Jimmy Vaccaro, Chris Andrews, general manager Ryan Growney and CEO Michael Gaughan. “VSiN will be on location and of course Jay and his staff will be a big part of this.”
There will be no change in the VSiN programming, which is as follows
• 12-2pm: Follow the Money (Mitch Moss, Pauly Howard)
• 2-3 pm: A Numbers Game (Gill Alexander)
• 3-5 pm: My Guys in the Desert (Brent Musburger, Ron Flatter)
• 12-2 pm: My Guys in the Desert
• 2-5 pm: The Green Zone (Matt Youmans, John Von Tobel)
Magliulo, Andrews and Vaccaro all make frequent appearances on VSiN (Vegas Sports Information Network), which began operation in late February and is home based adjacent to the South Point race and sportsbook. This will be the network’s first venture on location, but not the last. Plans are in the works for future live remotes along with added programming to cover 11 hours.
“We not only want to be an important part of South Point, but to promote the industry in Las Vegas,” Magliulo said.
The SuperContest winner gets $1 million, which matches the number of reasons to enter. The vibe is similar to the World Series of Poker Main event held annually at the Rio and once sports betting is legalized across the USA, the interest will hit epic proportions.
As for now the VSiN connection to Westgate’s signature event (which this year includes a $5,000 entry SuperContest Gold contest) provides the perfect lead-in to Sunset Station’s annual football seminar inside Club Madrid co-hosted by Brian Blessing and Chuck Esposito next Tuesday.
Encore: As of Monday afternoon, the Westgate SuperContest reached 776 entries, well ahead of last year’s record number of 1,854 according to Kornegay. He said that if entries surpassed the 2,071 mark, it would assure a first-time $1 million pay day for the champion. Also VSiN will be announcing the SuperContest standings as well as airing the weekly NFL lines each Wednesday on Musburger’s show at 3 p.m. during the 17-week season.
