This week I killed two birds with one stone as I got to watch Saturday college football and horse racing while enjoying a delicious meal at Charlie’s Bar + Grill at Wynn Las Vegas.
Along with the summertime remodel of the sportsbook at Wynn, the former Sports Deli was redone and rebranded as Charlie’s Bar + Grill to honor former casino executive Charlie Meyerson who was with Steve Wynn in the beginning at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City and spent the next 40 years as a casino “super host.”
You don’t read my food articles to get a history lesson so let’s get to it. In an age where many casinos are charging for a seat in their sportsbook to watch a plethora of games on a Saturday or Sunday, you can find a comfortable seat along with a decent meal just steps away from the betting windows and the ceiling-high displays showing all your favorite pro and college teams.
You can start your meal with Loaded Super Nachos, a giant Pretzel with Pub Cheese for dipping or a six-pack of Charlie’s Sliders. I was not able to try one of my favorites, chicken wings, on this visit but Charlie’s offers them in Buffalo, BBQ and Garlic Parmesan and I will be trying them next time.
A wide selection of sandwiches and burgers are available, including vegan options. I went with the KC Burger, which was served on a wooden cutting board and loaded with bacon, onion straws, slaw and barbecue sauce. One drawback is most of the options do not include fries. But they are available ala carte in either seashore, sweet potato or waffle variations for an additional charge.
Sandwich options vary from Grilled Portobello Mushroom served on a wheat bun to an Italian Sausage with peppers and onions on a hoagie roll, or a Southern Fried Chicken Wrap served in a whole-wheat tortilla. Everyone will find something they like on this menu.
My dining companion had the BBQ Chicken Salad, which had breaded chicken tenders coated in BBQ sauce served on a bed of romaine with avocado, cherry tomatoes, smoked Gouda, roasted corn, black beans and onion straws with a buttermilk ranch dressing. Other salad options include a Super Grain Salad, Caesar Salad and a Burger in a Bowl, which has all the great fixings of a burger without the bun.
For heartier appetites they offer entrees such as fried chicken, fish and chips, barbecue ribs, blackened salmon as well as a New York Strip. If you know me, no meal is complete without dessert and Charlie’s doesn’t disappoint with a selection of milk shakes including a Birthday Shake, Mint Cookie Shake or the Maple Waffle shake. For anyone looking for anything stronger, Charlie’s offers a nice selection of domestic, imported and craft beers including Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada, Ballast Point and Stone Brewing by the pint or the pitcher.
If you are looking to enjoy a great atmosphere in one of the nicest sportsbooks on the Strip and a good meal at the same time, check out Charlie’s Bar + Grill. I give it 3.75 forks.
