Las Vegas with all its glitz, glamour and neon lights might be known as the official home of buffets. While it is famous for gambling and big production shows, it is also home to some of the biggest and best buffets in the world.

I made my first trip to Las Vegas back in 1984 and was amazed by the big buffets the casinos were offering. Yes, my obsession with food started a long time ago but where else could you get so much food for such a small price? Back in the day, casinos used great food deals to bring customers in.

Over the years the Las Vegas buffet scene changed as they became upscale, no longer offering lots of average food at a cheap price. Elaborate gourmet feasts were now offered with high-end food and each casino trying to out do the other. Competition is good as it makes everyone try harder, and in the end the ones that benefit are the customers.

Cravings Buffet, located inside the Mirage, has taken that form of dining experience and added a twist. I highly recommend trying out their new VIP Experience with the Chef’s Table. For just $20 more you can take your buffet to VIP status with Cravings Chef’s Table. You need to make reservations as they will seat a maximum of 16 people at the Chef’s Table for dinner.

This VIP experience will include anything you want from the buffet as you are free to move about, but the real experience is getting the hand-selected, five-course meal only available to the diners at the Chef’s Table. It is served personally by the chef himself along with your own personal wait staff.

The first course was a sushi and charcuterie. We had two different sushi offerings along with cheese and prosciutto samplings. The cheeses were fantastic and would satisfy any cheese lover. The presentation on the cheese board was almost too pretty to eat. This is the perfect way to get your meal started.

Next up the chef prepared a fresh salad for the table with several different greens, berries, almonds and oranges with the chef’s special dressing. This was a perfect light salad as no one wants to fill up on salad at a buffet. Next up, served rodizio style, we had bacon wrapped turkey brought out on large skewers like you would get at a Brazilian steakhouse. They also served Angus sirloin that the chef sliced tableside and artfully placed on a platter with assorted grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes. The Angus sirloin melted in your mouth.

The final chapter of this delightful food journey came with the chef preparing Molten Chocolate Lava cake tableside. To watch the chef create this tasty dessert tableside added to the experience. Beer and wine as well as soft drinks, tea and coffee are all included in the price. They also offer specialty cocktails you can purchase with a $20 unlimited cocktail package.

Honestly, you get enough food with the five-course Chef’s Table special but a buffet wouldn’t be one if you weren’t able to explore the different offerings at all the serving stations throughout. You get the best of both worlds with Chef’s Table as you enjoy a unique sit down dining experience with the chef showing off his talents and at the same time enjoying all the favorites of a Las Vegas buffet, getting to try anything and everything you want.

The Chef’s Table package is $49.99 Monday through Thursday and $52.99 Friday through Sunday. Another added perk for guests is because you have a reservation you have no long buffet line to wait in. I give Cravings Buffet Chef’s Table VIP Experience a rating of 3.75 forks.
