Pizzeria Monzu offers quite the slice

We all remember the long standing Italian restaurant Nora’s that called 6020 West Flamingo Road home for as long as I can remember (nearly 30 years). Nora’s moved just down the street when they built the new restaurant, but their old location has a new tenant.

Pizzeria Monzu is the new concept created by Chef Mauro. This was a restaurant he grew up in and is happy to bring back to life. The inside has a completely new hip look with the wide-open dining area and the open-air kitchen.

The wife and I decided to stop for a late lunch before catching a movie. We got the lunch special – a monster slice and a salad.

You could have that enormous slice prepared the same as any pizza on the menu or create your own combination. The slice was great, which only means ordering an entire pie and eating it fresh out of the oven will be even better.

As good as the pizza was the salad was right there because it wasn’t just some little bland side. You could pick any of the specialty salads from the menu. I went with the Antipasto salad, which had Romaine lettuce, arugula, tomatoes, onion, Mozzarella, salame, ham, chick peas, Mediterranean olives, roasted bell peppers along with their house vinaigrette. I absolutely loved this salad.

This lunch combo is a great deal.

They have some great Salumi and Cheese selections with grilled bread as a starter. Several of the meats were in the salad and were so good.

When you order a whole pizza it’s not going to arrive in the traditional round style you are accustomed to but rather as a longer rectangle. The secret to Chef Mauro’s pizza is the dough. The process to make this dough takes five days and is what gives the pizza its texture along with flavor.

If you have ever been to Old School Pizzeria on Craig Road, you know what I’m talking about. Chef Mauro is the man behind that pizza as well.

If you like a little vino with your pizza, check out their extensive wine collection. If you want something with some real kick, try their homemade grappa or one of their hand-crafted specialty cocktails. From the minute you walk into Pizzeria Monzu you know this isn’t going to be your ordinary “let’s grab a pizza and movie” kind of night.

The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. The portions were enormous and well worth the price. I give Pizzeria Monzu 3.75 Forks out of 4.
