That’s the only way to describe the redesigned Palms Casino Resort on Flamingo Road – a mere hop, skip and jump from the Las Vegas Strip.
A portion of the $620 million remodel was unveiled Thursday by Palms VP/General Manager Jon Gray, the high-energy leader for Station Casinos, whose parent company Red Rock Resort Inc., added the casino to its portfolio in 2016.
The event provided mind-boggling highlight after highlight including cocktails, sushi and other delectable tidbits at Camden, a new upscale lounge just off the main entrance as well at The Unknown, a main lobby bar area that doubles as a showroom for noted British artist Damien Hirst.
Seeing is believing and Hirst, as part of his Natural History Artwork Series, has created a centerpiece for this cocktail area of a massive tiger shark divided into three parts with each section of the animal injected with and suspended in a formaldehyde solution within three steel tanks, each over six feet in height.
As we said, you have to see it to believe it.
The bar also features 16 of Hirst’s “Spots” paintings that are among the artist’s more famous works. Hirst artwork can also be seen on property at the more than luxurious Scotch 80 Prime, the new steakhouse that replaced the venerable N9ne. As was the former steakhouse, Scotch 80 Prime is a masterpiece itself, created by and under the aegis of Chef Barry Dakake.
Chef Barry, a long-time fixture on the local dining scene, has taken every part of the steakhouse experience from the food to the ambience and raised it to new levels.
Also unveiled Thursday was the Apex Social Club, a boutique open-air nightclub. Apex Social Club features four works of art from Dustin Yellin’s “Psychogeographies Humanoid Sculptures.”
Other artists with works showcased throughout the hotel include Dabs Myla, Timothy Curtis, Jason Revok, Keegan Gibbs and Olivia Steele.
Of course there were celebrities including “The Bachelor” stars Lauren Bushnell, Amanda Stanton, twins Haley and Emily Ferguson, DeMario Jackson and Jasmine Goode. Also Dutch bassist, songwriter and producer Bobby Jacobs, who is currently dating Stanton, was seen testing his luck at the tables.
There were also those from the world of sports including retired NFLer Reggie Bush and NBA great DeMarcus Cousins plus Olympian snowboarder Louie Vito and boxing promoter Don King.
Those who headed to the Apex on the 55th floor were treated to a surprise private performance by hip hop recording artist J. Cole.
Although other portions of the Palms project have yet to be unveiled, congratulations are certainly in order right now for Jon Gray and Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, co-founders of the Red Rock Resorts company.
HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY to GT’s very own Monti Rock III who is an amazing ball of energy that never seems to slow down. He could give the Energizer Bunny a run for his money. Cent’ anni, my friend.
See you around town.
