Conveying our Sushi favorite

This week I tried a new sushi restaurant, Konbea Belt Sushi located at 5685 Spring Mountain Road. We have a lot of good sushi places in town but this one is a little different.

One of the new trends is to have conveyor belt servers. We had one restaurant open earlier this year in Chinatown, but Konbea Belt Sushi takes the concept one step further and I like it. They offer this concept in an all-you-can-eat format.

Picture sitting at your table and having food constantly rolling by you. Fresh sushi and freshly made sushi rolls and appetizers. You see something you like, you grab the plate off the conveyor belt and start eating it. Sushi chefs are constantly filling the conveyor belt with fresh offerings. You will see a sign with the name of what’s coming up and what’s in it if it is a roll.

What makes this concept so great is having the small plates (tapas style) when it comes to the rolls. Usually when you go to an all you can eat sushi place, when it comes time to ordering a roll you get a full-sized roll, and if you are lucky some places offer half rolls.

I know you are thinking it’s all you can eat, but the problem is when you get a whole roll you are going to be eating one or maybe two rolls before you fill up, unless you are going with a group of people and everyone is sharing everything. Part of the fun is getting to try a bunch of different items and with these small plates there are just three pieces, so you can try as many different rolls as you want.

The sushi I had was good quality and I especially enjoyed the super white tuna, halibut and yellowtail. In addition to all the great sushi and rolls, you can also order off the entrée section of the menu for hot prepared dishes. These items are included in the all-you-can-eat pricing. I tried several of the dishes. For my first order I went with the Sliced Steak with Garlic Sauce and an order of Shrimp Fried Rice. Both were very good, and again, these were served tapas style, so you could try a bunch of different dishes. I also ordered the Korean BBQ Short Ribs which were good.

If you want to upgrade your dinner they have two crab offerings for a $6 upcharge. I didn’t get the crab this trip but the two dishes were Dungeness Crab with a Black Bean Sauce and Salt n Pepper Dungeness Crab legs. Well worth the $6 upgrade if you are feeling crabby.

Even though all the food is delivered by conveyor belts my waitress was constantly clearing plates, getting me drinks and making sure I had everything I needed. She was also there to answer any questions and offer suggestions on items to try. Lastly, you get one dessert item and I went with the Ice Cream Crunch Bar. It was so good.

With the all you can eat dinner priced at just $25.95, this is a great deal and an even better restaurant concept. I guarantee you will be taking a video of the conveyor belt and posting it on your Instagram account.

I give the Konbea Belt Sushi 3.75 Forks.
