MGM Springfield in Massachusetts won’t open until August and although the joint Native American casino venture in nearby East Windsor, Connecticut could be years away, competition between MGM and the Foxwoods/Mashantucket Pequot in the region has already begun.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe said this week it plans to seek permission to serve alcohol at its Mohegan Sun casino/resort until the early morning hours and Foxwoods Casino said it also seeking to extend last call until 4:00 a.m. in order to compete with the soon-to-open MGM Casino in Springfield. MGM Springfield received permission to extend alcohol service hours until 4 a.m. from state regulators late last month. The added service hours are restricted to active gamblers.

Local media report that Tribal officials have approached Connecticut lawmakers to extend serving hours on their casino floors in an effort to compete with MGM. Under current laws, alcohol service in Connecticut casinos ends at 1:00 a.m. during the week and 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday night.

MGM Springfield is scheduled to open on August 24. The Tribal joint venture in East Windsor hopes to open in the spring of 2020.
