Before we get into Wednesday’s first five races at Del Mar, just a quick recap of last week’s first five races: In the first race one of our plays was scratched and the runner we were left with finished second. We won the next four races with the early pick four paying $376.00.
This Wednesday at Del Mar:
Race 1: Maiden $62,500 2-year-olds go 5-1/2 furlongs. No. 9 Two Fifty Coup is the key runner in here. He showed good early speed in his second start when dropped in for a $50K tag. He now gets a bug boy upgrade with Flavien Prat, first off the Doug O’Neill claim and the move up in class. His last work was just super. The main danger will come from No. 5 Samurai Jack who exits the same race as Two Fifty Coup. He ran an even third and also owns a good last work. No. 8 Savagery drops in from two straight maiden races and also has good early speed. 9-5-8
Race 2: $8K claimers go six furlongs; we will just use two runners in the second leg. No. 2 Paynes Prairie on the drop by trainer Jonathan Wong, who has been sending out nothing but live runners at the meet, winning with two of his three starters with the other one finishing second. The bug boy Heriberto Figueroa gets the call. No. 5 Private Joke is the stablemate of Paynes Prairie and gets his first start off the Wong claim. 2-5
Race 3: $25K fillies and mares travel a mile on the grass. This race has a ton of early speed in it barring any late scratches. We will opt for a few ladies who will be sitting back off the hot pace. No. 1 Subic Bay gets back to the claiming price and distance of her last win for trainer Jeff Mullins who is having a solid meet. She will be flying late but will need a trip from her rail post. No. 5 Peach Cove gets her first start off the Mike Puype claim and has a big jockey change going from the ice cold Martin Pedroza to the hot Drayden Van Dyke. She will be in the second group and will look to get the jump on them turning for home. No. 7 Salsita is a five time winner on this turf course and also making a late run. This is a nice exacta box also. 1-5-7
Race 4: $20K fillies and mares go 5-1/2 furlongs and the key runner in here is No. 8 Always Believe off a big last work here on Aug. 10. She gets her second start of the meet and ran a good second here on July 25. No. 2 Miz Tianjin exits the same race and gets her first start off the $20K Eddie Truman claim. The good news is Prat will ride today. No. 10 Broome is the speed and comes off a resounding win here on July 28. She will be overbet off that win. 8-2-10
Race 5: We get fillies and mares going 1-3/8 for a $75K purse. No. 1 Fahan Mura just went wire-to-wire on this turf course at 1-1/16. She is a win machine winning 7 of her 18 starts. She has a big last work and Edwin Maldonado will be gunning again from the bell. No. 6 Queen Blossom will be sitting chilly right off the hot pace. She won the Grade III Santa Barbara at Santa Anita going 1-1/2 so the distance will be right up her alley. 6-1
Miss. gains Bryant
With race and sportsbooks popping up all over the country, a book in Biloxi, Miss., got the real deal when hiring top-of-the-heap race and sportsbook manager Brad Bryant. One of the most well respected and nicest guys around. He will lead the way in Mississippi running the Golden Nugget Biloxi, good news for all bettors in that area as Brad will be putting up fair prices on games and is well known for taking care of his patrons. A big high five from GT.
There are some good plays again in the NFL preseason week two coming up starting with a Thursday game.
Thursday, Aug. 16
(Lines subject to change.)
Eagles +2.5 at Patriots (40.5): Ya think Brady and his merry men and top dog “wild” Bill Belichick will want to win this Super Bowl rematch? We get the Pats at home and laying less than a field goal. We will be waiting in line Monday morning to bet this game. PATS
Chiefs +2.5 at Falcons (38): KC rarely wins a preseason game and they are even worse in Game 2’s, going a horrible 1-14 the last 15 years. Andy Reid just does not want to get anyone hurt. The Falcons will want to score some points at home after getting shut out last week by the Jets, 17-0. FALCONS
49ers +1 at Texans (37.5): Head coach Bill O’Brien for the Texans has done well in Game 2’s and the Texans have gone 6-1 ATS this week the last seven years. Houston is off a nice road win last week. TEXANS
Have a great week and always remember: Get out and make some bets, you just never know you, could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
Overs win: Usually the first full week of preseason action winds up an UNDER fest, but this was definitely not the case this time. The OVER went 9 of 12 on Thursday night and 11 of 16 for the week. Stunning!
