Utes travel to Northern Illinois might be a little bumpy

Week 1 of the 2018 college football season is in the books and Doc’s Sports Services was once again at the top of our game with a few big winners in our selection package.

We got tripped up on Thursday night with UCF blowing out Connecticut, 56-17, to easily cover as a 23-point favorite. However, a pair of winning plays on Saturday has us off to a 2-1 start. We had Notre Dame covering the one point against Michigan and BYU took its game against Arizona straight-up as an 11.5-point underdog.

Here are this week’s selections:

Take Northern Illinois (+11) over Utah: The Huskies started their season with a 33-7 loss to Iowa as 9.5-point road underdogs with the total staying “under” the closing 46.5-point line. Despite the lopsided loss on the road, Northern Illinois should play much better this Saturday in front of the hometown crowd. Marcus Childers got the start at quarterback in the opener with Jordan Nettles leading the way on the ground with 74 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Utah opened its new season against Weber State last Thursday night with a 41-10 victory as a heavy 29-point home favorite. With Washington and Stanford on the slate in two of their next three games, there is a good possibility the Utes get caught looking past UNI. Utah should get another strong effort from Zack Moss running the ball, but things are going to remain much tighter this time around.

Take Minnesota (-2.5) over Fresno State: Freshman quarterback Zack Annexstad got his college career off to a great start in a 48-10 victory against New Mexico State last Thursday with the Golden Gophers closing as 21.5-point home favorites. He threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns while completing 16 of his 33 passing attempts. Minnesota actually did most of its damage on the ground with 295 rushing yards and three more scores.

Fresno State looked rather impressive in its 79-13 victory over Idaho last Friday to easily cover as a heavy 24.5-point home favorite. This was another team that moved the ball down the field on the ground with 239 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 44 rushing attempts. This should be a great matchup against Minnesota, but the Bulldogs could struggle to keep things closer than a field goal.

Take Arizona State (+7) over Michigan State: Arizona State made short work of Texas-San Antonio in the season opener 49-7 victory as a 17-point favorite at home. Herm Edwards made his debut as the Sun Devils’ new head coach and Manny Wilkins looked sharp at quarterback with 237 yards passing and four touchdown throws. Arizona State racked up 266 yards on the ground on 36 carries.

The Spartans had their hands full with Utah State last Friday night in a tight 38-31 victory as 23.5-point home favorites. Brian Lewerke played well at quarterback with 287 yards passing and two touchdown throws while completing 23 of his 33 passing attempts. However, there has to be some level of concern with a defense that gave up 319 yards through the air. Michigan State is going to have its hands full trying to slow down the Sun Devils.
