While Ohio State has looked the part – back TCU

Two weeks into the season, we have been at the top of our game with a 4-1-1 record in our first six free picks.

This past Saturday, we cashed in on Arizona State’s 16-13 upset over the Michigan State Spartans as a 7-point underdog and Minnesota’s 21-14 victory against Fresno State as a 2.5-point favorite in two Big Ten picks. Our third free selection ended as a push with Northern Illinois losing to Utah, 17-6 by the 11-point spread.

Here are this week’s selections:

Take Mississippi (+20) over Alabama: Ole Miss is off to a perfect 2-0 start both straight-up and against the spread with comfortable victories against Texas Tech on the road and Southern Illinois at home. The Rebels rolled up 76 points this past Saturday after scoring 47 against the Red Raiders in their season opener. Jordan Ta’amu threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns his last time out with Mississippi adding another 167 yards on the ground.

Alabama has outscored its first two opponents, Louisville and Arkansas State by a combined score of 108-21 in its perfect 2-0 start both SU and ATS. The total went “over” the closing line in each of those games. Tua Tagovailoa has taken the majority of the snaps at quarterback and has thrown for 455 yards and six touchdowns. The Tide should come away with the SU win, but Ole Miss will prove to be a tougher test than the current spread suggests.

Take TCU (+13.5) over Ohio State: The Horned Frogs have looked rather impressive in their early victories against Southern University and SMU. In last Friday’s 42-12 win against the Mustangs, Shawn Robinson was held to just 146 yards through the air, but TCU’s ground game piled up 247 rushing yards on 42 attempts. Defensively, this unit should be able to keep the Buckeyes somewhat in check.

Ohio State has successfully navigated its way to victories over Oregon State and Rutgers at home for the expected 2-0 start. The Buckeyes have also covered large spreads in each contest with the total split 1-1. It stayed under in Saturday’s 52-3 romp against the Scarlet Knights in their Big Ten opener. With a big showdown looming later this month against Penn State, they could get caught looking past this Saturday’s contest at home.

Take Utah (+6) over Washington: After going against the Utes last week against Northern Illinois, they are in an excellent position to cover with the points in a tough test at home against the Huskies. Utah opened the new season with a 41-10 victory against Weber State as a 29-point favorite at home. Tyler Huntley has thrown for 565 yards and four touchdowns in his first two games with Zack Moss adding another 216 yards on the ground.

The Huskies bounced back from a tough 21-16 loss to Auburn in Week 1 as slight 1.5-point underdogs with a solid 45-3 victory at home against North Dakota, but they could not cover the closing 46-point spread. Going on the road for this week’s game could turn into a tougher test than expected. Washington has failed to cover in four of its last five road games.
