Churchill Downs Incorporated, the major casino and racetrack operator, today (Friday) is celebrating the grand opening of Derby City Gaming, a $65 million state-of-the-art historical racing machine facility located on Poplar Level Road in Louisville, near the historic track.
Derby City features 900 state-of-the-art historical racing machines designed in partnership with Ainsworth Game Technology in a venue that highlights Churchill Downs’ history with pictures throughout the main entrance of the 144th Oaks and Derby winners and the opportunity to view the 145th Derby trophy. The property also features two quick-service, walk-up food venues, a center bar with large format televisions, and seating for over 60 guests to take in sports action year-round.
Kentucky will tackle the question of legalizing sports betting sometime next year, according to legislative leaders.
Churchill Downs officials say the slot machine-like historical racing terminals at the Derby City Gaming facility will provide an estimated $15 million to $20 million in additional purse contributions to the Kentucky horseracing industry through larger purses that will boost thoroughbred sales and breeding operations throughout the Commonwealth.
Historical racing terminals generate random outcomes based on past horse races generating results in the manner of a slot machine.
