Venetian's LaRosa talks Deepstack poker

The Venetian is home to the Deepstack Extravanga Tournaments, some of the most popular poker tournaments in the world.  We interviewed Tommy LaRosa, the Venetian’s Poker Room Manager for his background and thoughts on poker.

GT: What is your background story, Tommy?

TL: “I’m 43 years old. I was born in Granada Hills, California, and moved to Las Vegas in 1985 when my Dad was transferred with work. I am a former minor league professional baseball player who found a career with The Venetian Resort Las Vegas after my baseball days ended. Card games have always been a huge part of family outings. We always play for quarters or dollars at the dinner table. Texas Hold’em has been a personal hobby of mine in brick-and-mortar casinos since I turned 21 years of age.”

How did you get into poker?

“I started in our Guest Services department in July of 1999 working valet, and I was fortunate to transfer into the Poker Department in April of 2006. Being that I was acclimated to the game by playing many nights, dealing came naturally. In the beginning, I worked every position I could in the room, to gain as much knowledge as possible. From running chips, to greeting our guests at the front board, and calling down games on the microphone, I took advantage of everything I could to help the room in any way.”

Tell us about your room at The Venetian. How many tables, games you spread, tournaments, amenities, etc.

“We have a 37-table room that provides comfort and value to the low-limit player. The guest experience is very important to us. We have plenty of space between tables, as well as a self-service beverage station serving hot coffee and cold sodas. On any given day, you can find some of the best selections of $1-2 and $2-5 no-limit Texas Hold’em cash games, along with two, one-day tournaments at 12:00 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. respectively, priced anywhere from $125 to $340 with a tournament prize pool guarantee unmatched around town.”

What makes your room popular or unique for players?  What are their favorite games?

“Tournament players love the value that our DeepStack Extravaganza tournaments provide. These tournaments have large starting stacks, deep structures, and the largest prize pool guarantees, making DeepStack the tournament home for all-low limit players. Our cash game players love our High Hand and Splash Pot promotions. When we are running a promotion, you will find the greatest selections $1-$2 and $2-$5 no-limit Texas Hold’em in Las Vegas.”

Any special events, tournaments or promotions coming up?

“Our $1,000 High Hand promotion kicked off Oct 1 and runs daily through Oct 31 from 12:00 p.m. -12:00 a.m. Players who match the High Hand during any qualifying period receive $2,000. Tournament players will love our DeepStack Extravaganza October 29 – November 25 which features more than $1.9 million in guaranteed tournament prize pools. Players can visit to find out all the latest happenings in the poker room."
