One of my favorite ways to relax on the weekends (besides going to the salon) is playing tournaments. With the WSOP Circuit wrapping up last month at the Bicycle casino, the next big tournament series I look forward to will be the Cal State Poker Championship at Commerce starting at the end of the month.
The best way to get my tournament fix is at Hollywood Park Casino since it is the only casino in town where I can play an Omaha tournament in the afternoon and jump right into a No-Limit tournament in the evening every Saturday.
The $2,500 Guarantee Big O Omaha tournament at Hollywood Park is a $60 buy-in with one $60 rebuy allowed. Players start with 10,000 chips, and can rebuy for 15,000 chips.
I thought by drawing a seat 3 and table 3 (my favorite omen) I was already ahead. I couldn’t wait to play.
I like a good deal, so the fact that you get a food voucher for $5 off a meal during the tournament or $10 off a meal when you play in a cash game the same day is a nice touch.
Players also get a voucher for a double share of jackpot if they are lucky enough to hit one before 11:59 p.m., on the day of the tournament. But what I especially like about it is the group of regulars that play in the game, including my husband. I always like friendly competition, so I can gloat when I outlast him, like I did this Saturday.
I celebrated too early as I was knocked out on the bubble of the final table. Boo! But there is always next week!
After I got over the disappointment, I looked forward to playing in the $3,000 Guarantee No-Limit Hold’em tournament with a $60 buy-in and one $60 re-buy.
I won an all-in with only Ace-high and promptly doubled up to over 20,000 in chips (the starting stack is 10,000). Alas, I made the final three tables, getting knocked out in 22nd place.
