We travel north this month to Reno to chat with Margie Heintz, the poker room manager at Silver Legacy, Reno’s newest poker room.
Silver Legacy Resort Casino opened its brand new poker room last month, serving guests and ONE Club members at Silver Legacy, Eldorado Resort Casino and Circus Circus Reno. The poker room is equipped with 13 tables, open 24 hours and located on the main casino floor next to the all-new Canter’s Deli.
The new room is managed by Margie Heintz, who is credited with being the first woman to ever deal at the World Series of Poker. Heintz is also a member of the Women in Poker Hall of Fame. She was inducted in 2011.
GT: Margie, you have an interesting history and story to tell. How did you get into poker?
MH: “I started in poker in late 1974. Few women were in the poker industry in those days. I was born and raised in Montana… a fifth generation Montanan. I turned 21 years old the year poker became legal in Montana. I was mesmerized by the game. I learned to deal and then took a vacation to Las Vegas in the summer of 1976. I was hired by the famous Bill Boyd at the Golden Nugget while on vacation. In March 1977, Jack Strauss had a major tournament at the Marina Hotel/Casino on the Strip. I dealt it and made many connections with big players.
“I was known to be able to handle big money games. Cowboy Wolford suggested I deal the World Series of Poker. In May of 1977, I applied and was sent to Benny Binion. I knew he had a ranch in Montana. So I introduced myself and we began talking about Montana. He liked me and allowed me to be the First Woman in History to deal the World Series of Poker. I dealt it again in 1981; sometimes in the cash games, I was pushing $500,000 dollar pots.”
Margie continued, “I came to Reno and opened up with the largest casino in the world at the time, the MGM Grand. It was May 3, 1978. I fell in love with the Reno/Tahoe area. I felt more at home in this area; Reno was small back then and Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I was a part of three more poker room openings after that. The Eldorado poker room opened in April 1986 and closed April 1988. It was open only two years and two weeks.
I went on to the Peppermill for 10 years. Then I opened the Eldorado poker room as the poker room manager on May 28, 1998; we closed the room 19 years later in May 2017. I opened the Silver Legacy poker room, as the poker room manager on May 19, 2017. I was inducted into the Women in Poker Hall of Fame in 2011. It has all been an amazing journey!”
GT: Tell me about your new room at the Silver Legacy. How many tables, games you spread, tournaments, amenities, etc.
MH: “The Silver Legacy poker room is very elegant and the lighting is the most beautiful I have ever seen in a poker room. The room has 13 tables that include a back area that is fully draped; it can be closed off for high limit, tournaments or a private party. We have a nice coffee area with complimentary cookies, muffins, brownies and sandwiches throughout the day.
“We are spreading $3/$6 Limit Hold’em and $3/$6 Limit Hold’em Full Kill, $3/$6 Omaha H/L Full Kill, $1-$5 Seven Card Stud, $1/$3 NL Hold’em, $3/$5 NL Hold’em.
“The SL poker room offers Daily NL Hold’em Tournaments at 10 a.m., and Tuesday and Wednesday Tournaments at 6 p.m. Many daily promotions run around the clock, Bad Beats, High Hand every two hours, bonus hands for Four of a Kind, Straight Flushes and the Royal Flush.
“There are cash Hot Seat Drawings on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as small incentives for early morning players. Our property is unique as three casinos are connected to each other. You do not have to go outside to walk from property to property. Combined, the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus have over 4,100 hotel rooms and 25 restaurants. The poker room is in the middle casino. We are in the center of all the action!”
More information about the Silver Legacy poker room is available at www.silverlegacyreno.com. In addition, the poker room is now available on the Bravo Poker Live app, which allows players to view game schedules and tournaments.
