Small, but mighty! Whatever your poker pleasure, the Las Vegas poker room at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is the place to ante up and get in on the neighborhood-friendly action.

This Las Vegas local’s casino has two poker tables, managed by poker room supervisor Eric Normand under the direction of Jimmy Johnson, the director of gaming. The poker room, located next to the newly remodeled r and sportsbook, operates daily Monday through Thursday opening at noon and weekends opening at 11 a.m. They will deal as late as players stay and go “all-in” for the final hands. The minimum buy-in for most games is only $40.

Normand is 61 and started dealing poker in 1985 at the former Silver Slipper and Castaways. He has been a mainstay now, working at Arizona Charlie’s since 1994. To learn the craft, Eric attended poker school in 1984. We asked him about his thoughts, experiences and his room at Charlie’s.

GT: Tell me about your room at Arizona Charlie’s – how many tables, games you spread, tournaments, amenities, etc.

EN: “Arizona Charlie’s has just recently upgraded the room and it is located next to our newly renovated race and sportsbook. We have two tables, no tournaments, non-smoking. We spread $4-$8 Hold’em, $1-$2 No limit Hold’em, or other games by request. The rake is 10% with $4 max.”

GT: What makes your room popular or unique for players? What are their favorite games?

EN: “The room is small and comfortable with easy access. Favorite games are $4-$8 and $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em.”

GT: Any special events, tournaments or promotions coming up?

EN: “We have a four-of-a-kind High Hand Jackpot promotion featuring Straight Flush and Royal Flush progressives. We double the four-of-a-kind and Straight Flush from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.”

GT: What are your interests, hobbies, family life like outside of the poker room?

EN: “My main hobbies include fishing and traveling. I have a large family in Las Vegas and we spend time together often (and) during the holidays. Regarding the future popularity of poker, I feel participation in the World Series of Poker, online games, TV viewing and technology will help maintain sufficient volume and interest to keep live poker in the mainstream.”
