Quickspin has made a big impact on the world of online slots in a relatively short time. Founded in Stockholm in 2011, the company has in this time managed to expand, to be acquired by another gaming giant, win numerous awards, and release a host of innovative slots games that can be played in some of the most prestigious online casinos around — not bad for a company that’s only been in existence for six years!
However, it’s probably no coincidence that Quickspin has been able to make such rapid progress in a notoriously competitive industry when you look at some of the names who have been driving forces behind the company. Founded by Daniel Lindberg, Joachim Timmermans and Mats Westerlund (Lindberg remains as CEO), Quickspin was acquired by Playtech, one of online gaming’s ‘big 3’ in May 2016, a takeover that does not seem to have dented the company’s innovative spirit or commitment to original and engaging slots games.
Now with more than 60 employees in both Stockholm and Malta, it is not only Quickspin’s growing catalogue of games that make it such an in-demand producer, but also its promotional tools that help to drive player engagement and retention.
Winner of numerous industry awards, including Innovation in RNG Casino Software in 2016 and Rising Star in 2014 at the EGR B2B awards (as well as a nomination for Game of the Year at the 2017 EGA Awards for Sakura Fortune), Quickspin releases new online slots regularly and these are always notable for introducing new and imaginative aspects of gameplay, or taking existing popular gaming elements and giving them a fresh twist.
Despite all their recent success, 2017 was possibly one of the most noteworthy years in Quickspin’s relatively short history. In December it announced it was entering the regulated Romanian gaming market for the first time by providing its portfolio of games to NetBet. This includes Quickspin’s latest release games, as well as its more established titles, this review looks into NetBet’s games which will soon be powered by Quickspin.
In addition, in October 2017 Quickspin struck a deal to provide video slots to Norsk Tipping, the state-owned Norwegian casino operator from January 2018, while in September it announced that its games would feature on the PokerStars casino site. If that wasn’t enough, Quickspin’s slots went live on Sky Bingo in August 2017, the first time they have been available on a UK-operated online casino site, while in July it launched its first land-based game when Second Strike was released on 7,700 Ladbrokes terminals across the UK.
What sets Quickspin apart?
One of the most notable aspects of Quickspin’s slots portfolio is that it doesn’t include themed or branded slots. Instead, there is an emphasis on original narratives and characters, or alternatively the reworking of classic stories and fairy tales that have a universal appeal and yet are ripe for a modern re-telling.
In addition, Quickspin’s focus is entirely on slots games. It doesn’t produce any table games, video poker, bingo or live dealer games, preferring to put its energies and resources into crafting its video slots.
In the end, it’s innovation that ultimately marks Quickspin out. Its games are always noteworthy for either introducing new gameplay features or reimagining existing ones, with the result that Quickspin slots provide some of the most engaging gaming action around.
Quickspin is also an industry leader in gamification, which is the introduction of activities and rewards into slot games that are beyond the essential gameplay requirements of reel, symbols and paylines. The latest Quickspin slots, for instance, all feature the Achievements Engine. This brings levels of achievement into real money slots (not dissimilar to those found in many social slots games), giving players an additional feature to engage with and which acts as an incentive to return to the game. There are six of these different events in Quickspin slots and four levels to complete, and when a player achieves one they are awarded a Quickspin token, which can then be exchanged for extra spins, re-spins, or to activate a bonus game.
To complement the Achievements Engine, in January 2018 Quickspin will launch its Achievement Races, which will enable players to complete levels and gain rewards even quicker. Achievement Races will feature in all new release games and will in time also be integrated into its existing games portfolio.
What are Quickpin’s best games?
The portfolio of Quickspin video slots may not be enormous when compared to some of the more established names in the industry, but it is nevertheless impressive owing to the innovative nature of their gameplay and the carefully-crafted themes and designs.
Some of the best-known Quickspin slots include:
- Sakura Fortune — A 5 reel, 4 row, 40 payline video slot that was the first to feature the Quickspin Achievements Engine and was nominated for Game of the Year at the 2017 EGA Awards.
- Mayana — One of Quickspin’s newest slots, but it has already made a big impression with its Growing Reels & Multipliers, re-spin feature and colorful theme.
- Mighty Arthur — Arthurian legends have always been a popular slots theme, but Mighty Arthur brings new vigor to the quest for the Grail. Featuring expanding and random wilds, a free spin bonus round and Mystery Nudge feature, the soundtrack to the game is especially impressive and demonstrates Quickspin’s high production values
- Rapunzel’s Tower — This is the much anticipated reworked version of the original Rapunzel game, one of Quickspin’s first ever slots. Rapunzel’s Tower features sticky wilds, a free spin bonus round and completely reimagined graphics and sound effects that are immersive across all platforms.
- The Epic Journey — Loosely based on Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, this dynamic and fast-paced video slot features three different sets of 5 reel, 4 row screens, giving you 100 paylines in total. The game includes a Volcano Wild feature, three different bonus rounds, and a free spin bonus as well.
Where can you find Quickspin slots?
You can play Quickspin slots at a large number of leading operators, both well-established names and newer entrants to the industry, including Dunder, Leo Vegas, Mr Green, Rizk, Vera & John, Betsson, Unibet, Guts, BetVictor, PokerStars, 188Bet and Thrills.
What does the future hold?
As far as one can make out from its public pronouncements, Quickspin has no plans to diversify into table or live dealer games, and will instead continue to focus on doing what it does best, namely producing high quality video slots.
However, it is the case that the company is seeking to have greater penetration into regulated markets and would also seem to be casting an eye towards Asia in anticipation of the liberalization of online gaming laws in the region.
We can also expect to see Quickspin continue to be an industry leader when it comes to gamification, as this dovetails neatly with their expertise in creating engaging narratives for their slots games, whether these be entirely original or the imaginative reworking of classic tales in which they have specialized to date.
