Vernon Downs will open its delayed 2017 harness racing meeting on Friday, Jeff Gural, Chairman of American Racing and Entertainment, has announced.
Word came after what is being called a productive meeting in Albany last week among state political leaders. Gural met later with a top Governor's staff member to explain the issues and the importance to the community of keeping Vernon Downs open.
Gural had delayed the opening day of racing amid significant financial losses due to the added competition from newly opened casinos in the region. The track was supposed to open on April 21. Gural insists that tax relief requested from New York State, is necessary and maintain the track as a financially viable entity.
