Delaware racinos fear competition

Delaware’s three racinos believe strongly that if additional gaming sites are authorized their profits will be lower.

Dover Downs, Delaware Park and Harrington Raceway even maintain that the general public is opposed to additional gaming sites in the state. They use the polls taken recently of state voters which support their position.

Not so, says House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf who has suggested that the poll results be discarded as being slanted.

He supports the position of Gov. Jack Markell (pictured) who last year recommended that the state add up to three casinos to generate more state income. The plan was scrapped by the legislature.

Even without additional competition, the three racinos have been struggling to maintain their profits. Last year, legislation increased both the gaming taxes and slot machine fees, thus causing a substantial drop in individual profits.
