Another Victory

Frank Stronach, founder of Magna Entertainment Corp. (MECA), scored a major victory last week when the bankruptcy court agreed to permit MI Development, a company that he heads, to gain ownership of Maryland’s two major racetracks – Pimlico and Laurel Race Course.

He followed that victory with another: the Arundel County Board of Elections agreed that the county voters should decide in November where slot machines should be located. That essentially killed the plan for a slots facility in Arundel Mills Mall and opened up the possibility that the voters would choose Laurel racetrack.

Slots at Laurel could save racing in Maryland, say supporters.
