New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he has fulfilled his promise to place the horse racing industry in his state on a self-sustaining path by arranging to have the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park operated by private-sector operators beginning June 1.

New York developer Jeff Gural, owner of Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs, will run the Meadowlands while casino owner Morris Bailey will take over Monmouth Park.

Since taking office 16 months ago, Christie has been looking for a way to get the state out of horse racing, since both tracks were operated by a state agency.

A commission Christie appointed recommended that the state end a $30 million annual subsidy to racing, which has been done.
