The new Galaxy Macau casino was only open for 16 days during May but its revenues were enough to push Macau over the $3 billion monthly gambling mark, establishing a new record for the world’s hottest gambling market.

Macau officials reported the 42.4 percent increase in gambling revenues was the fourth consecutive month in which the fledgling casino industry had set a record.

Said one analyst, in a note to clients: "May is typically the second strongest month in the year after October given the Golden Week. Hopes were high for last month, with gaming operator Galaxy Entertainment opening its Cotai resort on May 15. Galaxy Macau welcomed over 20,000 guests within its first 90 minutes after its doors opened on a Sunday afternoon."

Another analyst suggested "the local gaming industry continues to be a strong indicator of the excess monetary liquidity in Asia and specifically China."

All major casino operators in Macau were believed to have benefited from May’s record gaming play. Galaxy Macau, however, is expected to change the method in which the properties have been operating by focusing on mass-marketing appeal rather than on the exclusive VIP category that emphasizes high bet sizes, rebates and personal services.
