The reason the licensed casinos in Macau want to develop properties on the Cotai Strip was underscored last week with the opening of Sands Cotai Central, the newest project that is majority owned by Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS).

According to a report in Monday’s edition of the Macau Daily Times, over 84,000 people visited Sands Cotai Central during the first six hours of its opening.

"An outdoor crowd of more than 5,000 people watched the opening celebration at the port-cochere of the Conrad Macao, with queues extending over 400 meters around the building," according to a company press release.

"After doors opened," the release continued, "the first 12,000 visitors received a gift of a golden ingot featuring a limited edition lucky dragon charm."

In total, said the company, the new complex welcomed over 200,000 visitors on opening day.
