Lack of slot revenue at tracks taking toll on Churchill Downs

The lack of slot machine revenue at Kentucky tracks seems to be taking its toll on Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.

Horsemen have noted and are upset that Churchill Downs has had the shortest spring meeting since 1975 and current fears are that the meetings could get shorter.

Reason given: a shortage of horses... this in the Bluegrass State, birthplace of many of the greatest thoroughbreds in racing history.

For several seasons, track officials have fought vainly to get legislative approval for slot machines.

The track’s business model, said a horsemen’s spokesman, “doesn’t show that they’re making money on racing.”
