To the surprise of many, the addition of Video Lottery Terminals at Scioto Downs in Columbus, Ohio, has boosted the track’s pari-mutuel handle and its simulcast handle, as well as providing an additional source of gambling revenue.
The Ohio State Racing Commission reported last week that the track’s on-track handle rose 45 percent while its simulcast business improved by 26.3 percent for the period from June to December 2012.
Commission Chairman Robert Schmitz called the improvement “remarkable.” At some other North American racetracks, race horse betting did not improve appreciably following the VLT installations.
