Part of the complaint against Sweepstakes cafés in Ohio was that these gambling sites were taking money away from the state’s legal casinos.
Gov. John Kasich signed a virtual ban on such properties in June and the state’s top law officers have promised to enforce the laws.
Fearing state involvement, the community of Canton has ordered an extension to its moratorium on permits for such storefront sweepstakes parlors in case legal challengers to a state law banning the businesses are successful.
Supporters insist the law is too restrictive and many of the affected stores are so-called mom and pop operations providing jobs in local communities.
