After warnings from naysayers that the tribe would have difficulty receiving federal approval for a plan to build a casino in the town of Taunton, Massachusetts, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe proudly announced last week it had received approval for the plan from the Department of Interior.

“The Interior Department’s approval of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) represents a key milestone in the acquisition of land for our tribe,” Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell said.

“It is also a key step forward for our Project First Light” destination resort and casino in Taunton, which is expected to bring thousands of jobs to southeastern Massachusetts, Cromwell added.
