Illinois Senate passes bill extending online betting

Feb 3, 2014 7:01 PM

Just prior to adjournment, the Illinois Senate passed a bill that extends an online betting law that also allows horse racetracks to keep their racing schedules intact this year.

The measure was immediately signed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

The bill that allowed online betting was set to expire on Friday. Since the bill also dealt with the horse racing provisions, the Illinois Racing Board warned major budget cuts without an extension.

Despite months of lobbying by the racing industry, an agreement wasn’t worked out until the final hours of legislative action.
