Casinos ordered to pay taxes on promo games

Mar 24, 2014 9:01 PM

A South Dakota circuit judge has ruled Deadwood casinos must pay taxes on their free promotional games.

Three casinos – First Gold, Mineral Palace and Four Acres – had sued the state, saying their promotional games should not be taxed since they have no monetary value.

The judge disagreed. He sided with the state saying any awards given out in free games have to be included when a casino calculates its profit.

The tax is based on the casino’s gross adjusted revenue.
