He may have spent nearly 10 years in prison following a corruption conviction but that isn’t stopping 86-year-old Edwin Edwards from throwing his hat in the ring for a Congressional seat.
The former Louisiana governor, a popular visitor to Las Vegas casinos during his political heyday, said he doesn’t think his conviction of manipulating a casino license for Ed DeBartolo, who at the time owned the San Francisco 49ers, would prevent him from seeking public office.
“I’m positive I can run. I’m confident I can win,” Edwards was quoted as saying.
A Republican opponent, Craig McCullock, said the Democrat’s terms as governor were “a stain on our state’s history.”
