Gaming analysts continue to have high rankings for the companies that operate casinos in Macau but a little apprehension began showing last week with the concern that the former Portuguese colony will impose a smoking ban.
Although the ban, if imposed, would be limited to the mass market area, and not affect the high-roller VIP rooms, analysts were still concerned.
Noted Cameron McKnight of Wells Fargo, full bans in other markets have immediately impacted revenues by 10%-20% year-over-year.
If pressure from unions and activists continue, a full ban on smoking throughout the casinos could be imposed by 2016, analysts noted.
