Maine Senate kills gambling expansion bills

Mar 31, 2014 9:02 PM

Maine’s Democratic-controlled Senate has killed a handful of bills that would have expanded gambling by authorizing several casinos. Included in the bills that were rejected was one that would have permitted Scarborough Downs to build and operate a racino.

Without the addition of slot machines, say the operators of the state’s premier harness track, Scarborough Downs will have to go out of business.

Track owners say the opening of the state’s two full-fledged casinos, in Bangor and Orford, have caused the harness track to see its revenue decline substantially.
