Tioga Downs has presented a revised version of its plans for a racetrack and casino in New York’s Southern Tier.
The track, which is located near Nichols, hopes to add table games, restaurants and a hotel if the New York Gaming Commission approves the plan. Bidding for the casino license – the fourth and final casino permit available upstate – was re-opened following a request from local leaders in the Southern Tier, who hope the presence of gambling will help generate the crowds and spending that will lead to a revival of the area’s “struggling economy,” as the AP described it.
As it turned out, Tioga Downs is the only bidder. Tioga owner Jeff Gural said he “significantly revised” his plans after an earlier presentation failed to pass muster.
There is no timetable for a decision on Tioga’s proposal. A public hearing is planned this planned soon in the Southern Tier to let local residents share their views on the subject.
