Kien Huat names Michael Brown to Empire Board

Asian financier Kien Huat, who recently acquired a major position in Empire Resorts Inc. (NYNY), owner of Monticello Raceway, has named Michael Brown as the new chairman of the Empire board.

Brown is the former CEO of Foxwoods Resort, a property that was financed by Huat. He succeeds Dave Hanlon, a former CEO of the Rio Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas.

Monticello Raceway’s future as a full-fledged casino might depend on a new vote of the St. Regis Mohawk tribe. A previous tribal vote, to determine whether the St. Regis Mohawks should continue in its pursuit of an off-reservation racino at Monticello, was voided by the tribal election board. The vote to abandon the project was favored 178-140.

Objections were raised, however, because the tribe failed to post the proposal 20 days in advance of the vote.
