Nebraska counties challenge casino petition

A group hoping to put gambling on the November ballot in Nebraska may have trouble getting enough signatures validated to get the issue before voters.
The group know as Keep the Money in Nebraska submitted about 130,000 signatures, but three of the state’s largest counties – Lancaster, Douglas and Sarpy – won’t validate about 30 percent of the signatures submitted in their areas, according to news reports.
“That seems impossibly high based on the standards that have been used for past petitions,” Scott Lautenbaugh of Keep the Money in Nebraska told KETV channel 7.
Lautenbaugh says he is open the state’s other 90 counties report strong numbers.
Lautenbaugh said his group has requested documents from the secretary of state’s office to make sue signatures submitted with the petition are being validated in a manner consistent with past petitions.
“We’ve invested a lot of time and money in getting to this point,” he said, “so we’re not going to just let it go.
