Choctaw Indians to vote soon on new casino in Mississippi

The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will soon receive the opportunity to vote in a court-ordered referendum regarding the proposed Red Water Casino in Leake County.

A date has yet to be confirmed for the vote, however, it is expected soon. Tribal Judge Jeff Webb ruled in August that 1,624 signatures on a petition were valid. The judge’s ruling came after tribal authorities, including the tribal chief and the Tribal Election Commission, in May, voided enough signatures to end up short of the 1,612 valid signatures required.

Court action was brought to allow the vote on the $25-million project and the court agreed.  Red Water Casino would be the tribe’s fourth casino in Mississippi.
