Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel, owned by Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming, is modifying its stakes schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 Thoroughbred season, due to the region-wide impact of Hurricane Harvey.
Delta receives a significant portion of its business from nearby Houston, hard hit by the huge storm.
The 84-day meet, popular nationwide with evening simulcast players, is scheduled to get underway on Oct. 18.
Delta Downs, at the recommendation of local horsemen, has moved to cancel eight open-bred stakes during the first half of the season, including the Delta Downs Jackpot (Grade III) on Nov. 18. Delta Downs is currently planning to continue its full calendar of stakes races in the second half of the season, as originally scheduled.
“While we are disappointed to scale back our first-half calendar, we believe this decision is appropriate, given the tremendous amount of damage throughout the region and the current focus on recovery efforts,” said Steve Kuypers, vice president and general manager of Delta Downs.
