Tioga Downs Casino & Resort in upstate New York has officially become a full-scale destination complex with its opening Friday of a 161-room hotel.
The Nichols, New York-based property becomes the third commercial hotel and casino to become operational in the state this year amid concerns that the area may be oversupplied after early reports indicated that revenues in the upstate region are falling beneath some projections.
Tioga Downs’ casino was launched last December, featuring Las Vegas-style gambling with slot machines and table games. The property had previously operated only as a harness racetrack with gaming machines.
The six-floor hotel also includes new food and beverage options and convention facilities. A new clubhouse with a golf course was also unveiled as part of the expansion at a total cost of over $4 million, according to local media.
Owner Jeff Gural said that he expects that the new enhancements will boost activity and visits and will bring further growth to the casino. Nichols is near the state’s Pennsylvania border roughly halfway between Binghamton and Elmira.
