Some slot machine players in Finland will soon have to verify their identity before using a gaming terminal.
The country’s gambling monopoly Veikkaus, last week, announced changes that could affect over 18,000 machines located in supermarkets, gas stations and other non-casino facilities.
The changes aren’t expected to fully take effect until 2023, but Veikkaus says the new identification requirements will begin appearing on older machines and be part of built-in technology as machines are replaced.
Just how Finnish players will be required to authenticate their identity has yet to be determined. Local gambling authorities believe identity authentication is an effective method curbing compulsive gambling.
