The New Jersey Casino Control Commission, just eight days before Atlantic City’s Ocean Resort Casino scheduled June 28 opening, has granted a special hearing needed to provide final approval for a state casino license.
The announcement of the June 20 hearing comes as Ocean Resort continues to prepare for its grand opening.
"This isn't just a technicality. Being awarded a casino license is a very major step," said Daniel Heneghan, spokesman for the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. "We will hear testimony and they will discuss their plans to attempt to meet the burden of operating a casino, after which the commission will deliberate and make a decision."
If the gambling license is granted, Ocean Resort must still undergo a building inspection and operations test before its grand opening ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. on June 28.
The commission granted the nearby Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, which is expected to open the same day, its casino license at the beginning of May.
