New York won't pass sports betting legislation this year

Don't look for New York to join New Jersey and Delaware in offering Nevada-style sports betting in 2018.

That’s the word from the speaker of the New York state Assembly who says there isn't enough support to pass legislation authorizing sports wagering this year.

Bronx Democrat Carl Heastie said late this week that lawmakers in his chamber have raised "significant issues" about legislation that would allow bets at casinos and on mobile devices.

Legislative observers believe Heastie's comments, most likely, end any chance of a sports betting bill passing before lawmakers adjourn for the year next week.

Numerous states are expected to soon legalize sports betting as a means of raising tax revenue now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that it's up to all individual states to decide whether to allow it.
