Italy is moving to ban all gambling advertising in the country, according to European media reports.
Luigi Di Maio, Industry and Welfare Minister in addition to his role as Deputy Premier, said at a press conference earlier this week, "I think this is an industry that has become a bit too big, at the expense of people's health and dignity: we are going to cut it down in size."
The decision reached at a cabinet meeting Monday quickly came under heavy criticism from the betting industry and from football (soccer) clubs, which rely on sponsorship from betting firms.
Claudio Fenucci, chief executive of Serie AÂ team Bologna, was quoted by Il Messaggero daily as saying the government's "crazy" move will deprive football clubs of 100 million euros (116 million dollars).
