Gambling advertising in Italy is now against the law after that country’s Council of Ministers this week formally approved a blanket ban on the practice starting January 1, 2019.
Advertisers with existing agreements extending beyond January 1, 2019 were granted permission to fulfill their contracts.
The ban renders illegal all advertising for gambling-related products and services across all media platforms – including television, websites and radio. More than half of the clubs in Italy’s top football division, Lega Serie A, have sponsorship deals with firms from the gambling sector that cannot now be extended.
The ban exempts the state-run national lottery or its products.
