A reported 25,000 gambling apps have been deleted from the online Apple Store in China, reports the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The deleted apps were supposedly illegal gambling apps disguised as legal lottery apps. Apple hasn’t confirmed the number of apps it expunged, but 25,000 would represent nearly 1.5 percent of the iOS apps available in the country, according to media reports.
In a statement, Apple said gambling apps were illegal and “not allowed on the App Store in China.”
The company said, “We have already removed many apps and developers for trying to distribute illegal gambling apps on our App Store, and we are vigilant in our efforts to find these and stop them from being on the App Store.”
The Chinese market generates about one-fifth of the company’s revenue, and Apple’s popular iPhone is assembled there.
