In Greece, recent reports indicate numerous casino/resort heavy hitters are expressing interest in a casino project at the former international airport site in Athens.
Caesars Entertainment, Hard Rock International, Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands and Melco Resorts & Entertainment all have reportedly expressed interest in the project that would include a 30-year operating license. The Hellenic Gaming Commission said it is seeking “a world-class integrated resort casino operation” as a central part of the Hellinikon project.
In addition to a world-class casino, the project would be comprised of hotels, convention and exhibition facilities, themed attractions, entertainment, shopping, gourmet restaurants, cultural elements and other tourist attractions.
Ellinikon International Airport served Greece for sixty years until March 2001, when the new Athens International Airport replaced it. The Hellenic Gaming Commission is hoping the winning bidder can begin construction of what would be a multi-billion dollar development by early next year.
There are currently nine operating casinos across Greece, with two of the three largest operating located in the greater Athens area.
