Legalized sports betting in New York will become reality this week with the first wagers being placed.
The sportsbook at Rivers Casino in Schenectady opened Tuesday and the FanDuel sportsbook at Tioga Downs Casino Resort in Nichols is expected to open Friday with an official grand opening ceremony.
With the Rivers book accepting its first wager -- $20 on the Seattle Mariners -- New York became the ninth state to have sports betting following the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2018 to allow states to have legalized sports betting and join Nevada.
The FanDuel book, one of four to operate in the Empire State, will open for business at 11:30 a.m. PT at Tioga Downs, a harness track located 85 miles southwest of Syracuse. Several dignitaries are expected to participate in the opening ceremony.
New York State still has not approved mobile wagering on sports and the four sportsbooks are all located upstate. There are no sportsbooks in the New York City area at this point.
The other two licensees for sports betting – Resorts World Catskills and del Lago Casino located in the Finger Lakes region, have not announced when they will begin operations.
