Fever pitch

Okay, let’s see what the pros can do

Now that was one crazy week of football to start the season, and if the NFL is half as exciting as the college games, we are in for some real fun.

My first 10-team parlay went down, but it is a long season and I will keep on plugging and try to pull one off; and if anyone out there hits one, please photo copy and let me know and I will run it in my column as we are looking for winners.

Bob Scucci at Boyd Gaming said someone caught a $50 10-teamer for $40,000 last week at the Orleans, so at least somebody is on the right track (he probably followed my advice last week!).

My week was choppy but I did pull out the East Carolina game in what was the most exciting game of the week with the Hail Mary to win the game.

Now let’s take a look at some of my early plays this week.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Friday, Sept. 10

West Virginia -13 at Marshall 4 PM ESPN TV: The Thundering Herd got a lesson from the Buckeyes and I believe they can improve off of that effort. The Mountaineers were taking advantage of Coastal Carolina 31-0. MARSHALL +13

Saturday, Sept. 11

Georgia +2½ at South Carolina 9 AM ESPN 2: The Bull Dogs have been a great road dog the past few years and the "ole ball coach" faces an SEC powerhouse. GEORGIA ON THE MONEY LINE

Idaho +28½ at Nebraska 9:30 AM (note time change): The Vandals covered their first seven games last year but I don’t see that happening again this year. The Cornhuskers made a statement last week and will make another one this week so we will lay the lumber. NEBRASKA -28½

Colorado +8 at California 12:30 FSN TV: The Buffalos won their big rivalry game and now face big Pac 10 opponent the Golden Bears. Colorado wants to prove that they can play with the big boys. COLORADO +8

Florida State +8½ at Oklahoma 12:30 PM ABC TV: Is it possible that the Seminoles are for real under new HC Jimbo Fisher? This game will tell a big story as the Sooners were life and death to beat Utah State last week. FLORIDA STATE +8½

Michigan +4 at Notre Dame 12:30 NBC TV: Finally this could be the year of the Irish but they must get by Michigan at home to have a real shot at anything big time; the beads will be all over Notre Dame stadium and I know for a fact "the gipper" will be there as well. NOTRE DAME -4

Miami Florida +10 at Ohio State 12:40 ESPN TV: The Hurricanes have been waiting a long time for this rematch of the National Title game when losing to the Buckeyes 31-24 as an 11 point favorite. Just hate betting against my beloved Buckeyes but never bet with your heart as the "Canes" get the money in this huge game. MIAMI +10

UNLV +23½ at Utah 1 PM VER TV: The Rebels showed some talent in a loss against a huge Wisconsin team; they will stand their ground in this game. UNLV +23½

Oregon -13 at Tennessee 4 PM ESPN 2: The "Vols" have their third HC in three years and at one time Knoxville was one tough place to play and get a win, but those days are gone and they just do not have the guns to outscore the Ducks who look to be on a mission. OREGON -13

Penn State +11½ at Alabama 4 PM ESPN TV: "Joe Pa" has a freshman QB playing in just his second game and now must go on the road and face the National Champs. Paterno has pulled some off in the past but not this time as the "Tide" just has too much defense and will not lose in Tuscaloosa in a big game like this. ALABAMA -11½

Virginia +18 at USC 7:30 PM FSN TV: I will take one last chance with USC and Lane Kiffin in his home debut as the Cavaliers must travel cross country and the Trojans now have gotten the ocean breeze and sand out of their hair; lay it and maybe after all the early games you can sit back and enjoy. USC -18

Other games you can add to your parlays and teasers:

Thursday, Sept. 9

CENTRAL FLORIDA +8 (note date change)

Saturday, Sept. 11

GEORGIA TECH -13½

BUFFALO +17

SAN DIEGO STATE -10

RUTGERS -13

Stations Casino has made some changes in their race and sports books; in the race book depending on what kind of boarding pass you hold you get your Racing Forms free or pay a dollar. Also in the sports book you can now trade your points in at the kiosk and use them to make sports bets. A regular at Palace Station since it opened way back in 1975, I think is Arnold Kopelle, whose main bet is the twin Q and he has hit thousands of them. Arnie, as we all call him, told me that he really didn’t mind paying a buck for the Form as he has been getting them free since 1975 and according to his figures he has saved $42,367.50; so he feels he is way ahead especially with all the twin Q’s he has hit and all those comps he has received over the years. I wonder how much I have saved on Forms over the years?
